PRAISE FOR "HEY, JOE"

Since its release in the Philippines in early March, 2000, Hey, Joe has been garnering fantastic reviews - and we only had to give away free beer to half the reviewers...

"The American-born lerner is well qualified to write about his corner of Asia, the Philippines... he offers some refreshingly non-judgmental insights..." - Far eastern Economic Review

"Love it or hate it, Manila... is always ripe for anecdotes and wry observation. You'll find bth of these in long time expatriate resident ted Lerner's hilarious Hey, Joe... the must read ..." - Business traveller Asia-Pacific

"Lerner is at his best... such as in the finely observed piece on the behind-the-scenes shenanigans that accompanied a 1995 international boxing bout." - South China Morning post

I've found it exceedingly enjoyable, insightful, informative, ans, at times, laughpout-loud funny. Congratulations. I sincerely hope it is the first of many. Nigel Collins, Editor in chief, Ring magazine, USA.

... Lerners humor easily shines through, making this anthology a must read not only for expats but also for Filipinos... Ivy Liza F. Mendoza. Manila Bulletin. May 13, 2000

The book fascinated me and had me hooked... Ma. Selina Alvarez, Malaya Newspaper, March 20, 2000 (Malaya is a large national daily in the Philippines)

Hey, joe is probably one of the best books on Manila to come out of late. I hate to say this but it was a big plus that the author is American. Only with such detachment could this truly unique perspective have been captured on paper.
Dante N. Peralta II, The Daily Tribune, May 7, 2000

Lerner's at his best when he recounts his forays at the Balintawak market, the ways of the cheapo bars, the sliding scale of fortune-tellers' fees, or rites of passage involving the prizefighting business. He can be prolix, but in often engaging. Absorbing, even. Alfred A. Yuson. The philippine Star, July 31,2000

Lerner seems to be equipped with extra-sensitive senses and an acute power of observation that makes for very entertaining and articulate writing. "Hey, Joe" tackles the mundane, bizarre, amusing, macabre, and maddening aspects about life in Manila.

Lerner comes across as truly interested, amazed, and fascinated trhough the easily neglected balut vendor, the omnipresent lugaw vendor, the cash strapped bar girl, the bustling Balintawak Market and the sabungero (cock fight player). No detail seems to escape him. And neither does his sense of humor and child-like fascination.
Juan Ramos Tanjuatco. The Manila Times, March 31, 2000
(The Manila Times is one of the oldest daily papers in the philippines.)

The Yiddish Yank Ted Lerner has really pissed me off. We have been fellow scribes attempting to make a living in a world of 2 pesos a word. Because of this fact in life, we both had adopted the simple policy of never using 10 words when 100 were possible.

Now lerner has written his first book and I was asked to review it. Having just put down, I am really pissed off because he has clearly shown that he has somwething that eludes myself -- talent with a capital "T". Read more ...
Alan C. Atkins, The Foreign Post, March 16-22, 2000

Lerner finds some kind of hidden magic in the nuances of everyday Pinoy life, magic that has long since vanished from Western living. His clean, friendly prose serves "Hey, Joe" well, acting as a magnet for those who want to see yet another version of Manila -- this one through the eyes of a besotted foreigner. Ruel S. De Vera, Sunday Inquirer Magazine, August 13, 2000

In his book, Lerner caricatures various Filipino characters that are so familiar, not because you know them in person but because you know that's how Filipinos are. And, after years abroad, you realize these are the people that make you dream of going back. Read more ...
Leo A. Deocadiz. The Sun, Hong Kong, September 2000

In Hey,Joe American writer Ted Lerner does a magnificent job of describing to his readers all the uniqueness and charisma that the Philippines has to offer.

I think Ted Lerner's book is probably the most interesting one of the lot if I had to pick.

My uneducated impression of the Philippines before reading this book was changed dramatically afterwards.

His witty stories of life in Manila brought both laughter and repulsion.

He really seeks the adventures. From the casinos to the cockfights and all of the girl shops, Ted sacrifices himself for journalism.
